Benefits of Martial Arts for Neurodivergent Kids & Adults

Martial Arts holds key benefits for kids and adults who learn and think more creatively. Neurodivergent people generally have great long term memory, strong creative and problem solving skills, and/or a deep focus on special interests. These traits align well with traditional martial arts training.

Eight Benefits of Martial Arts Training

1. Traditional martial arts training, like Kempo at the Universal Kempo Club, focuses on individual growth, not on team competition. There is no struggle with the pressure of competing with others in the class environment, the focus is on self-improvement.

2. All students work towards specific goals at their own pace at a traditional school. Their accomplishments towards reaching new skill levels (like colored rank belts) boosts their self esteem and keeps them motivated.

3. Martial art techniques and forms are broken down into digestible bits. Students learn gradually, repeating and adding steps as they go emphasizing self control and concentration. The repetition helps them to anticipate what will come next.

4. Focus is the main tool in martial arts training. Students must stay focused to learn and complete their movements. Instructors are like coaches keeping the students focused on the task at hand.

5. Coordination is continually worked on to help students understand their body in regard to space and other persons. As physical limitations are pushed, students learn the power of "mind over body."

6. A good martial arts school will provide structure. The ranking system, class levels, and behavior in and out of the school are made clear. The expectations are reinforced between training and home life.

7. Martial arts training helps students get out frustration, anger, and extra energy in a safe and controlled environment while practicing self control. Fighting is taught as a last resort for self defense.

8. A traditional martial arts school will value its students like a family. Respect is valued and students are encouraged to support one another.
